Coastal Retaining Walls with a Decorative Gabion Finish: Project Overview
Seaview Meadows in Saltdean, East Sussex, is an award-winning housing development featuring an art-deco inspired design. Constructed with timber-frame construction, an EPS insulation system, and white silicone resin render, the homes are situated on a sloping site overlooking the sea.
To retain the various garden levels and create strong boundaries to the rear of the development and access road, Westridge Construction worked with M3 to install a hybrid retaining wall solution – using the CLF10GS retaining wall units with the StoneboxTM gabion façade.
The result combines the structural performance of CLF walls with the natural look of stone, while using significantly less material than traditional gabions.

M3 installed 105 m of retaining wall with heights ranging from 1 m to 3.75 m, topped with 247 m² of Stonebox façades. A reinforced concrete foundation supported both the precast wall and the gabion façade, ensuring long-term performance.
The modular design minimised site disruption and reduced the environmental footprint of the build, aligning with the developer’s vision for a sustainable, high-quality coastal scheme.
Why The Stonebox System Was the Ideal Solution
Traditional gabion basket walls are wide, heavy, and require large quantities of stone – often quarried and transported over long distances. For a development where space, appearance, and sustainability were all priorities, our StoneboxTM system offered a more efficient alternative.
StoneboxTM is only 200 mm thick, meaning at least an 80% reduction in stone compared to a 1 m³ gabion basket. For taller gravity walls, traditional gabions can be several metres thick at the base, so the space and material savings are even greater. This not only reduces environmental impact but also speeds up installation, lowers transport costs, and results in a cleaner, more compact footprint.
The cantilever retaining wall units behind the StoneboxTM provide the structural stability, while the gabion façade blends the walls into the landscape and complements the architectural design.
