Show Garden Retaining Wall Installation: Project Overview
We were delighted to see our CLF10GS retaining wall units featured in the WaterAid Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024 – a striking, design-led landscape that went on to win a gold medal.
The precast walls provided both structural support and a clean architectural backdrop, forming the boundary on two sides of the garden.
The project had a strict three-week build window, so speed and reliability were essential. Our freestanding walls were installed in just one day using a vehicle-mounted HIAB, giving the landscaping team immediate access to continue work.

With only three weeks to complete the entire garden, the wall system had to be installed quickly and work the first time. Units were installed using a vehicle-mounted HIAB onto a compacted sub-base and a sand blinding layer. No in-situ concrete was required, avoiding any delays for curing time.Â
Once installed, the tongue and groove joints kept the units in alignment – vital for the render finish applied to the walls. The walls supported earth mounds and boulders placed in front and on top, with no movement throughout the show.

The CLF10GS retaining wall system offered the speed, simplicity, and structural strength needed for a high-pressure event like Chelsea. As the first component installed on site, the walls provided a solid framework for building the garden around, enabling the team to begin shaping earth mounds, placing boulders, and installing key features.
Using tongue-and-groove joints for alignment and a no-fix installation method, the walls slotted effortlessly into place without the need for drilling, grouting, or delays. Their smooth vertical faces were then hand-rendered, creating a beautiful natural texture that complemented the planting and design.
